Texas A&M University has always had a strong presence of the military and veterans. Founded in 1876 as a military academy, we are proud of our long standing tradition of association with the military. Currently over 1200 students, both veterans and dependents of veterans, receive veteran or military educational benefits. We are committed to providing the best possible educational experience and service to all that attend our University. Texas A&M commissions more officers than any university outside of the military academies. We are also proud to have seven Medal of Honor recipients among our Aggie Former Students. Texas A&M University is a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Consortium affirming our commitment to recognize and work with current or former military students and their families who want to obtain a college education.
In early 2013, the VRSC began to informally build contacts around campus that could help support our growing population of student veterans. The list grew very quickly and the concept of the AVN was created to keep track of these people. We have expanded the list to include other offices beyond the academic departments; we now have contacts for over 100 TAMU offices as well as a large list of local, state and national resource contacts for our students.
In 2014, we partnered with the Association of Former Students to begin building the “Aggie Veteran/Military Constituent Network” which will become a former student extension of the AVN. Our goal is to have our AVN contact list transformed into a searchable web-based program next year that can link to other veteran networks through Texas and the nation.Please check back regularly for updates as our list is rapidly growing.
HOW DO I JOIN THE AVN? Quite simply…you volunteer by letting the VRSC know that you wish to become a designated resource for our military-affiliated student s. Email the VRSC Director, Jerry Smith, atgsmith@tamu.edu or call 979-845-3161.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF AVN MEMBERSHIP?The primary benefit is our ability to collaborate better to make our students more successful.
Throughout the year, the VRSC will host numerous “VetConnect” Events that are designed connect our student vets with each other and faculty, staff & advisors. As an AVN partner, we may invite you to participate in some of these events (usually a free breakfast or lunch) with student veterans.
