Since joining the TexVet team, I have added plenty of partners, resources, and events from the Houston area to our website; but I had never physically been there. This past weekend, Perry gave me the opportunity to visit Houston and represent TexVet while attending the "We Remember 2015 Honoring Our Pre-9/11 Veterans" conference. The event was wonderful. It was educational and informative.

This might be the blog that gets me the hate mail. It is a story I have to tell though. I waited to ensure my experiences were consistent before putting it in writing. But here goes.

My husband and I get truly amazing service at the VA Outpatient Clinic in Austin! Our experiences have been top notch.

I realize the struggles many Veterans are facing. I certainly do not mean to relegate the concern we all have for timely, professional, thorough, VA health care. But, I also feel like it is important to share my own POSITIVE experience.

I was exhausted when I got home from San Antonio a few weeks ago. I started to run hot water for a bubble bath went to the kitchen and poured myself a glass of wine. On the kitchen counter some "left over?۪ Halloween candy caught my eye and I grabbed a piece of chocolate. I thanked God for all of them. I realized I take all three; a hot bath, fine beverage, and sweet treats for granted. I realized all three of these things are luxuries, but luxuries I could have every day. Then I thanked God for the basics too.

I learned yesterday why Election Day is held the first Tuesday of November. Historically, two factors influenced the decision the most. At one time, our Country was predominantly a Christian and Agrarian society.

Why November?

November was chosen because it falls after the autumn harvest and before the wet, cold, windy, winter. The harsh winter weather would make it too difficult for much of the country to travel to the polls. Holding elections after the harvest and during milder conditions was crucial for the farming communities.

Benjamin Franklin said "Where liberty dwells, there is my country." As our Nation celebrates Armed Forces Day let us all rejoice in the freedoms and liberties we experience each hour of every day. My latest email from my son, Zac, described his elation over something he called "swim call". A Navy tradition whereby sailors are allowed, encouraged even, to jump from the aircraft carrier into the ocean below. You heard me. Jump from the carrier.
